DYSCALCULIA AND OTHER Ds: SpLD Central, Thursday June 29th 2017

On 29th June 2017 Crossbow Education host the third SpLD Central conference and exhibition, at Yarnfield Park in Staffordshire, UK. The keynote speaker this year is Prof Steve Chinn, who will be presenting the two morning sessions on dyscalculia and maths learning difficulties. Prof. Chinn has lectured and provided INSETs and CPD in some 30 countries worldwide and has been a keynote speaker at many major conferences. He set up the first Post Graduate Certificate course in the UK for maths and dyslexia which was accredited by the BDA for the AMBDA (Numeracy). The course was validated by MMU (4 Masters modules at M level) and was delivered for 4 years under Mark College’s Beacon School funding.

Prof. Chinn was a speaker at both The Sunday Telegraph Festival of Education in June 2016 and The Sunday Times Festival in 2015.

As well as writing maths books, worksheets and tests he has contributed chapters to many books, including, ‘Dyslexia and Mathematics’ (which was the first ever UK book on maths and dyslexia), ‘Special Educational Needs’, ‘Dyslexia and Stress’, ‘The Companion to Dyslexia’ and ‘Dyslexia in Context’. He has also published many papers and articles. The first edition of his book, ‘The Trouble with Maths’ won a TES/NASEN award in 2004. His first book, ‘Mathematics for Dyslexics’ (described as ‘seminal’ in a review in the journal ‘DYSLEXIA’), written in 1993, went into 4th edition in 2016.

Prof. Chinn will be presenting the two morning lectures:

Keynote 1: Dyscalculia and Maths Learning Difficulties.

This session will look at dyscalculia and Maths LD from a research perspective and a classroom perspective. It will discuss definitions and describe a classroom accessible diagnosis of the factors that create difficulties in learning maths.

Keynote 2: Teaching maths for understanding

This session will demonstrate a developmental approach to teaching maths that uses carefully selected and designed visual images matched to the appropriate maths vocabulary. Lessons can be designed to develop understanding and thus support long term memory and retention of maths concepts. The structure is based on decades of teaching pupils who struggled with maths.

Afternoon workshops

Two parallel workshop sessions will run in the afternoon, exploring other topics of interest to SpLD professionals, especially dyslexia and ADHD. The organisers were delighted to secure Fintan O’Regan, a highly sought-after international speaker, for the session on ADHD. His workshop is sure to be heavily subscribed. Delegates choose two of the following afternoon workshops:

Teaching and Managing children and young people with ADHD   Fintan O’Regan
Identifying and overcoming barriers to writing with dyslexic students   Rachel Ingham
Transitioning children with SpLD from Primary to Secondary School   Beccie Hawes
Morphology: teaching outside the phonics box   Judy Capener
Overcoming Barriers to Comprehension   Sue Francis
Embedding Reasonable Adjustments in post-16 curriculum settings   Dominic Griffiths

Resources Marketplace

Crossbow Education, the conference organisers, have exhibited at SEN events for 23 years, and know what delegates like: high quality relevant resources, and time to look at them. About 15 of the UK’s best-loved specialist SpLD suppliers will be there, and the extended lunchtime and two refreshment breaks, as well as the registration period, allow a good opportunity to see what they have to offer. Beccie Hawes, one of the presenters and leader of an SEN advisory team in the region, will also be presenting a lunchtime “pop-up clinic” offering advice on dealing with specific issues that arise in the classroom. The clinic is called “I have a child who…” – the title is self-explanatory!
